One Sunday in Hong Kong

7/21/2013

I worked in Hong Kong for just two years but the attachment I have with this place cannot be compared to any city I've been to. From the sights, the lights, the people, the culture, the food, the goods -- it seems every detail in the city brings back joy and happy memories. Can't forget that one bright Sunday when I walked around Central and took photos of our domestic helpers. FYI, a typical Sunday in Central Hong Kong is like Rizal Park on Christmas Day. The parks and streets are full of people, there are some cultural activities happening, you can see balikbayan boxes everywhere, and you can hear noise similar to a Ginebra game. Yet, these "imperfections" make me miss HK more. Hong Kong has been my second home and I always keep on coming back for more.

Below are some of the products of that one Sunday, circa 2002. I experimented on several candid shots by placing the camera on my chest to make my documentation discreet. As a result, 75% of those were bad and unusable haha. I used a Canon EOS film camera and two rolls of Kodak Proimage.

Old school yet Film is cool

I miss shooting old school film cameras.

Using film makes me experience my shooting more rather than looking on the result of my shot at the back of my LCD everytime I shoot. With a limited 12-36 shots from a roll of film, I am much more selective with my shots, making me focus more on my composition to avoid wasting any of my film. Each roll is priceless. And like what I posted in my FB, I miss the excitement and anticipation of seeing my developed rolls of film. I used to be a staunch proponent of using film cameras but I have to adapt with a changing world. Arguably, the real advantage of a digital camera is the ability to take as many pics as its memory (and battery) will allow, to get the best shot and reduce the possibility of mistakes.

It is really hard to compare these two for they are living on separate planes. They are two different arts. It's like comparing watercolor from oil. Each has its own charm and uniqueness but it always boils down to which is more convenient for you. For now, yes it's digital. But I am preparing myself for a comeback film experience anytime soon. Am thinking of including lomography in my wedding packages, why not?
